Ben Mitra-Kahn

Ben Joined IP Australia in 2012 as the Chief Economist and has also been the General Manager of Policy and Governance since June 2018, responsible for policy, legislation, international affairs and advice. Before working at IP Australia, he was the economic advisor to the UK intellectual property office for three years and worked in academia, consulting and ran a translation company, variously in the UK, India and Scandinavia.
Ben’s education is in economics, with a PhD from City University London, and he still writes academic papers. Most recently he has published a paper on the impact of crowdsourcing prior art at the USPTO in the Journal of Applied Economics, and a review in the History of Political Economy. In 2017 he won the international Indigo Prize in economics for a paper on alternatives to GDP.
